If you’ve been following me thus far, you know that I’m doing some things like tai chi, meditation and yoga to combat anxiety, but today it dawned on me to try something new. My inspiration came from that Brendan Fraser movie Blast from the Past that we watched a few nights ago (seemed appropriate at the time).
My favorite scene in the movie by far is when Brendan Fraser’s character goes out to try to find a wife and he winds up performing an intricately choreographed swing dance number. When the number is over, everyone asks him how he knows how to dance like that and he tells them that he had a daily dance lesson from his mom growing up.
As an aside, I’ve been doing ballroom dancing since college (shout out Northeastern huskies!). I’m good, not great, but I just love how it makes me feel when I’m dancing. I even roped Phil into taking lessons before we got married. We went to my dance studio (Murray Hill’s Fred Astaire) and took lessons for the better part of a year. We learned a choreographed routine to our wedding song: Ed Sheeran and Andrea Bocelli’s Perfect Symphony.
The movie made me think of our wedding and then that made me think of those daily dance lessons in the movie—just in case you were trying to identify my internal thought process.
So, after our 10 minutes of tai chi today, Phil and I did a practice lesson of the hustle on YouTube. We learned the basics of the hustle when practicing for our wedding so we had some fun social dances in our repertoire. We brushed off our old skills, practiced the basic moves and by the end of 20 minutes we had graduated to dancing to the Bee Gees soundtrack of Saturday Night Fever.
Giuliana was watching us intently from her baby swing and we were laughing and enjoying ourselves more than we’ve had in a week. I also made a mental note to start teaching her how to dance once she can walk.
After all of that physical activity, social media brought to my attention that it’s St. Joseph’s Day . I hadn’t decided on what to cook for this evening’s meal just yet, and that led me to plan an Italian-themed dinner comprised of a quick stove top Bolognese sauce with homemade pasta made with our pasta maker.
Phil decided to bake simple sugar cookies and make a Limoncello-themed cocktail for happy hour which ultimately means that we’ll certainly need daily dance classes to burn off all of these calories. Happy St. Joseph’s Day everyone.
