Expecting a baby? Check out what I’m reading to help prepare for childbirth, delivery and beyond
I love to read and sink my teeth into information on subjects that I deem interesting. When we found out we were pregnant, I began asking my friends for book recommendations. Not everyone seemed to be on the literary kick that I was once we realized we were expecting, but here’s what I settled with this far.
Ina May Gaskin’s Natural Childbirth by Ina May Gaskin.
This book was gifted to me by my friend Lauren Benbassat (new momma bear and founder of mēle). This was a transformational read that really has me focused on having the most natural childbirth that I can possibly have.
What to Expect When You’re Expecting by Heidi Murkoff.
It’s taken me almost 5 months to pour through this bible of pregnancy and childbirth experiences, and while it literally leaves no stone unturned, I’ve enjoyed taking my time reading this and skipping such sections that weren’t applicable to me. I’m someone who would rather “know” that “not know”, so take it with a grain of salt. I know some mothers felt this book was overwhelming, so my advice is take your time. And always remember that knowledge is power.
Natural Hospital Birth by Cynthia Gabriel.
While I was so inspired by Ina May Gaskin’s at home birth stories, we still made the decision to deliver at NYU hospital across the street from our apartment. With that in mind, I was told about this book through my prenatal yoga teacher at NYU. I thanked her profusely for the wonderful recommendation!
The Birth Hour Podcast by Bryn Huntpalmer.
So this isn’t exactly a book, but I’ve made this podcast part of my morning commute routine. I walk back and forth to work every day and tackle a new episode of the podcast as they become available. It’s a wonderful way for women to share their true, real birth stories. No BS, no theories, no judging… it’s just women talking about their experiences. It’s been a wonderful way for me to prepare for childbirth and I’m so happy I found it!
