I’m a New Year’s resolution kind of gal.
I appreciate evaluating what’s going right/wrong in my life and making changes accordingly to serve me well in a new year.
This year, for obvious reasons, is different. I didn’t do my normal list and my accompanying blog post, but after reading an incredible New York Times article in their At Home section about pandemic resolutions, I changed my mind.
I’m trying what the NY Times dubbed “micro” resolutions—small adjustments that will (hopefully) serve me in and out of pandemic living. (I see you 2022!)
Micro- Workouts
Juggling full-time work with full-time childcare where my husband and I take turns being on/off, it’s hard to get a full 45 to 60 minutes to myself consistently. I’ve given up trying. Instead, I’ve invested in two apps: one is Yoga with Adriene’s Find What Feels Good and the other is the Sculpt Society. Both apps have so much variety in their libraries and both have shorter “quickie” programs.
In between work calls, I’ll sneak in a 13-minute arm burn and later on, I’ll wrap with a 25- minute yoga session while babe sleeps.
Reading anything other than books related to birthing or child care
Earlier this year, we bought a weekend subscription to the NY Times (hence my inspo for this here blog post). While we only the weekend edition, I still struggle getting through the entire paper in a week’s time. But when I make the time, I inform myself, I learn something new, I grow as a more interesting person with each article I devour. More of that this year— and one new book a quarter. Not an outrageous ask for myself. Hoping I can keep up!
Self-care: foot baths, yoga and meditation
I need to take one hour to myself each week for my Epsom salt foot baths and foot scrub ritual. I put on my candle, drop some lavender in the bath and sit back and enjoy. And while I’m pretty good keeping up with my daily / weekly yoga practice, I plan to use quick meditations to combat daily anxieties.
Powering down
I need to put my phone down a half an hour before bed no matter what. Screens rule our lives. At the very least, I won’t let a screen ruin my sleep. Period.
Text / call a friend I haven’t heard from in a while
The pandemic is affecting us all on so many different levels. We have no idea what’s going on with others. Text. Call. Check in. That’s the plan.
Short daily walks with Giuliana for fresh air
We need outdoor time even in the dead of winter. When I lived in the city, I walked to work, so unless the weather was absolutely horrible, I walked. That’s my plan for my daily walks with Giules. Unless it’s awful, we’ll bundle up and get out and breathe fresh air.
For all my friends who have set resolutions this year, good luck and Godspeed— and comment below to let me know what you’re resolving to do in 2021.
