Maternity Fashion: From Practicality to Photo Worthy

Being fashionable while pregnant and uncomfortable is no easy fete.

I felt as if I went from caring about my ensembles, accessories, hair and eyelashes to worrying about back pain, bloating, cravings and an expanding waistline.

I barely gained weight in the beginning of my pregnancy (due to the dreaded morning sickness) but by the time I started gaining weight I was still trying to squeeze into my more comfortable/forgiving clothes.

It wasn’t until one doctor’s appointment where I complained about maternity clothing that my OB suggested that I look into Rent the Runway’s maternity section— which sounded like a genius idea. I could order the sizes I needed for the stages in pregnancy I was in and then simply send them back without having a closet full of pregnancy clothes I would eventually need to unload.

I was also conscious of the fact that I would be in the midst of the holiday season and colder months towards the end of my pregnancy, so I would need a party outfit here and there and a good winter maternity coat.

When not wearing RTR, I supplemented casual clothes from Gap Maternity, Target and Kindred Bravely for delivery gear, comfy pregnancy underwear and nursing bras that I highly recommend.

I was also given a great tip by my friend Brooke to purchase the Sketchers GoWalk sneakers for back/ foot support in my later stages of pregnancy while I was still commuting back and forth to work on foot in New York City. While these shoes are not fashionable in any sense, they are like walking on air. (Pro tip: I made sure to buy the plain black ones that went with most of my outfits.)

For my fancier maternity outfits, that I needed to purchase for our maternity photo shoot and our baby shower, I bought three adorable and super comfortable dresses from MotherBee Maternity. I stuck to solid colors as opposed to patterns and dressed them up with scarves and jewelry for different events.

While I’m now in the postpartum period, I’ve kept my RTR subscription for now, even though I’m no longer shopping in the maternity section. I’m sizing up from my normal size and selecting fashionable, comfy sweaters for the winter season.
