Outer Boro Broad sits down with Tamiko White, a brand builder, style expert, media personality, entrepreneur, and actress. This true renaissance woman talks about her life in Brooklyn and her love of the fashion industry. Her latest book, Careers in the Fashion Industry, is a must-read for those fascinated by and looking to break into that world.

Q: You are a born and bred New Yorker. Tell me about where you were born and where you live today?

A: I was born in Chelsea, New York City and lived in Lefrak City in Queens. I went to high school in Washington, D.C. and college at the University of Maryland in College Park. I’ve lived in Los Angeles for a period of time, and currently call Brooklyn home.

Q: What do you love about living in Brooklyn?

A: I love the culture of Brooklyn - artisanal food, culture, style, energy,  and the relaxed meets urban feel.

Q: Why were you attracted to the fashion industry as a career?

A: I don’t remember a time when I wasn’t attracted to fashion. I always loved style and my family loved clothes, so I grew up with an appreciation for dressing.

Q: What was your career path like?

A: My career wasn’t a path at all; it was a contorted discovery!

I started out in retail at 15 and worked in operations, management and sales. I started modeling and acting, which put me in front of the camera and introduced me to production. I then transitioned to owning a showroom which cultivated my business, merchandising and marketing skills. Now I use all of the things I’ve learned as a media personality,  brand consultant and author.

Great look or HUGE miss?!

Q: What advice would you give to young women starting out in fashion?

A: LEARN THE BUSINESS! Fashion is a business so master the business and the creative.

Q: For today’s New York business woman: what would be the best fashion tip you’d share with them to put them on a path to success?

A: A great black suit. A well-designed blazer which work with the suit and alone. And a ton of accessories! Accessories can remix ANY look!

Q: What does it mean for you to be a New Yorker?

A: It means tenacity.  New Yorkers don’t take NO for an answer and never quit. But then again, my mom taught me that, too.
